How To Winterize Your Boat
With WINTERPROOF™ Marine Water System Antifreeze
Keep your boat safe through the winter and ready to set sail in the spring. WINTERPROOF™ Marine/Boat Water System Antifreeze with BURST GUARD™ -50˚C Guarantee provides up to 1 year protection from the date of purchase against any bursting and cracking up to -50˚C in all your boat’s pipes and waterlines, when used as per the directions of the boat manufacturer and the directions on the label. Follow these simple steps to keep your boat ready for your next marine adventure.
Since every boat is different, be sure to follow your owner's manual before starting the winterization process. Also, remember that some boats may have extra components which may require additional steps to winterize. Follow the steps below that apply to your boat.
Before we begin, it’s important that you know not to dilute the WINTERPROOF™ Marine Water System Antifreeze product. Any water remaining in the lines and drains will cause the product to expand and damage waterlines. Bring product to room temperature before using.
A fuel stabilizer, winterizing kit, fogging oil and WINTERPROOF™ water system antifreeze for boats. Make sure your gas tank is completely full, to avoid condensation.
Make sure your gas tank is completely full, to avoid condensation. Keep your owner’s manual handy. Some steps might differ for your specific boat. It’s a great time to clean your boat and make sure it’s ready to go next season. You will be happy you did.
Add stabilizer and fill it up to keep air from getting in.
DIY PRO TIP: If your oil and filter need changing, now’s the time. Check that there’s no water in the gearbox. If you have water in the gearbox, the oil will look milky. If that happens, make an appointment with your dealer.
Connect a set of flushing muffs to a hose. Attach them to both sides of your engine’s water intake. Next, turn on your water source, start your engine and let it run for 5 minutes – enough time for the oil to warm up and the stabilizer to reach the injection system. Before switching off the engine, spray fogging oil on the engine. You’ll know it’s enough when thick smoke comes out of the exhaust. Then turn off the water and the engine. Now take off the flushing muffs.
Use your owner’s manual to locate the drain plugs for the engine and exhaust manifolds. Open the boat drain plug. Fully drain the engine, coolers and exhaust manifolds. Once everything’s drained, close up the plugs.
If your boat has a drain cock open the tap and empty the water. Then close it.
Two jugs is generally enough. Larger boats, or those with showers, toilets or other amenities may require more. Consult your boat’s manual or mechanic for the amount needed for your boat and its storage conditions.
Locate the engine’s main water supply. Disconnect the hose and prepare to pour your WINTERPROOF™ antifreeze. Empty 1 full jug of antifreeze into the engine’s main water supply.
Locate the hoses that transfer cooling water from the engine to the exhaust manifold. Pour half a jug into each hose. Once you’ve finished, tighten all hose clamps.
DIY PRO TIP: Some boats are equipped with an internal water system. Refer to the WINTERPROOF™ RV Winterizing video for this type of system.
Unplug the boat’s batteries.
Check the propeller for any damage, and make sure the shaft’s clean.
If storing your boat outdoors, wrap it with boat shrink wrap to prevent mold and damage.
